Thieves are lurking around businesses on Forestdale Boulevard. Investigators are patrolling to keep hard workers safe but a suspect got the upper-hand at the Exxon Mobile Mart gas station on February 1, 2015. Investigators say two gas station employees were kicked almost before they could blink. "The whole thing happened very quickly, probably within 30 seconds..." said Sergeant John Pennington of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Surveillance video shows a man forcing two gas station employees on the floor. The employees, who were putting away money and cutting off the lights to leave for the night, did not see the suspect walk in, but the cameras did. The man had a gun and demanded money before kicking them on the ground. "It's our understanding there was a significant amount of cash taken in this robbery. So chances are someone may have shared it with someone else who would like to make some money for themselves," added Sgt. Pennington. He believes the gunman may have bragged about getting so much money and hopes someone will report the robbery.

Arsons in McCalla Community-JCSO
Posted on Thursday, February 05, 2015
A fire starter is roaming neighborhoods in Jefferson County. Someone torched a home in McCalla. Investigators want to catch the person before another house burns. A Google Street Map shows the focus of the investigation which centers on a home next to a convenience store. A view of the location looks different from a few weeks ago. "It was very rainy this particular evening. "... We believe fire to be the result of an arson," said Sergeant John Pennington with Crime Stoppers. Surveillance cameras mounted at the store captured a white mid-2000s Nissan Maxima pulling up outside the house. "We believe there is a good chance someone in the area would have possibly seen this vehicle," added Sgt. Pennington. Cameras continued to roll and caught images of the fire. Someone called 911 about 10 minutes after it started. "Investigators know the arsonist used some type of chemical to fuel the fire. They are working to figure out where the chemical was purchased. "If a person uses a propellant, they may have it with them or may have to acquire the propellant in close proximity and time to where the event actually occurs," added Sgt. Pennington. Rpbbery-Always Money Store in Center Point-November 15, 2014-Jefferson County Sheriff
Posted on Sunday, January 04, 2015
Investigators are busy trying to find who robbed the 'Always Money' in Center Point. Crime Stoppers Investigators told ABC 33/40 the accused robber forgot something very important. "What's surprising is the man does not cover his face. Initially, he walks in with his jacket on, but his face is fully visible," said Crime Stoppers Director Teresa McClendon. ABC 33/40 got surveillance video showing the man walk into the business. Investigators say he pointed a gun and forced an employee to hand over money. Cameras also recorded the man following the employee to a safe. "This is a gift, in law enforcement, to be able to see an offender come in with his face not covered, not partially blocked and have good video," added McClendon. The employee handed over more money and the man left the store. The investigator says the 'Always Money' employee walked out of the store and followed the accused gunman to a nearby parking lot. He says once the gunman was there, he got inside a car where another person was waiting," added McClendon. The driver could be in trouble too. "When you act in concert with someone committing another crime, you are participating in that crime as well. Anything that flows from that crime, you are also going to be responsible for it," added McClendon. Someone called Birmingham Police the early morning of November 20, 2014 telling them a young man was lying in the road on Laurel Avenue. Investigators gave ABC 33/40 a picture of the 19 year-old identified as Kelvin Dwight Lowe. Police want information. "Any and all. We take the good with the bad. I personally believe in truth. There is always a little bit of deception. When there is deception, there is a little bit of truth," said Birmingham Detective James Canino. The investigation shows Lowe told family he was going out with friends. Investigators say he got into a silver or gray Impala. "We're still trying to identify the car as well as the occupants of the vehicle. There is a lot of talk going around, but there is not anyone who wants to come forward." Detective Canino's challenge is not only finding the car, but where the teenager was shot. "Was he put out of the vehicle? Was he on foot at the time he was shot? There are a lot of open doors right now. Where, when and who? Those are the three things we need to know right now." Theft-$14,000 from WWII Veteran-October & December, 2014-Jefferson County
Posted on Monday, December 15, 2014
Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff's office need your help to find a man who scammed an 87-year-old World War II veteran out of $9,000 by pretending to be a deputy. The victim says he had been scammed out of $5,000 back in October, but did not report it. On December 4, he was contacted by a man who claimed to be an investigator with the Sheriff's Office. The man told an arrest had been made in the original scam and that his help was needed to take down the operation. The victim agreed to help and was told to meet the man at a restaurant on Academy Way in Bessemer. He was approached by a man wearing a green jacket and blue jeans who had a badge. The victim says the man told him he could not give him his name because he was working undercover. He told the victim to withdraw $9,000 cash and a $5,000 cashier check from his bank to use as bait money to catch the bad guys. He was told his money would be safe and returned to him. He drove to the bank and the suspect went with him. He then told him to drop him off down the street in case they were being watched. Once he had the money, he picked up the suspect and was told to go to a convenience store at Highway 150 and Raymond Muscoda Road. When they got to the parking lot, the suspect took the check so he could "get fingerprints" on it. He walked around the building and came back a short time later to return the check. He then told the victim he needed the cash to do the same. He took the cash and walked around the building and never returned. The victim returned to his ban and deposited the check before calling the Sheriff's Office. If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777 or leave a tip here on our website. All tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and those that solve crimes or lead to arrests are eligible for cash rewards.

Detectives continue to work to uncover what happened in the final hours of David Williams' life. He was shot and killed several blocks from his home. Police are sure someone in the neighborhood knows who pulled the trigger. David Leon Williams was out one night in October of 2009 when someone took his life. Witnesses said they heard several gunshots. They saw Williams running from an alley, and he collapsed at the corner of 26th Street Ensley and Avenue F. Williams himself lived on 23rd Street Ensley, and we need someone to provide more about what he was doing that night and who else was around that time. Already, we've been told a group of juveniles were in the area flashing a gun. Now we need some names to go with that report. What's the word on the street? No doubt, plenty of people have talked about it, and there might be some truth to those rumors. Let us check it out.

Cold Case-Homicide-George Phillips-July 2010
Posted on Thursday, June 19, 2014

It's been almost four years since George Phillips lost his life. It was July 2010, but there's still time to solve this cold case. Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said detectives need some anonymous tips on why he was killed and who's responsible. While George Phillips was found on a Sunday morning, several people say he was riding around the neighborhood the day before. Eventually, someone noticed him along a stretch of 13th Avenue North. He was in a Chevy pickup truck parked in the alley behind a vacant apartment. He was slumped down in the cab and bleeding from his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A witness reported hearing two gunshots the night before, but we don't know who pulled the trigger. We understand people may be afraid to share what they know, even though time has passed. But there should be no fear when you're talking to Crime Stoppers. All we want is to find whoever killed this man. If you know anything about his final days, Crime Stoppers will take your call, and we will keep you anonymous. In fact, Crime Stoppers cannot call you to court to testify. Just dial 205-254-7777 to submit a tip. So you have nothing to lose. We need to know details. What was Phillips doing the day before? Who was he going to see? Had he been having any trouble lately, or was somebody wanting something from him for any reason? He did not have to die this way, so the least we can do is prosecute his killer. And we can find that person as long as you tell us what you know.
